Here’s a guide to help you figure out the perfect book to get your friends or partner this Valentine’s Day. Books make amazing presents because not only are you giving them a physical, typically beautiful, thing, but you’re also giving your friend an adventure. Plus, you really get to show off how well you know your friend by picking out a book that just screams them.
For The Artsy One…
Everyone has that artsy friend. You know, the one who probably wears berets and could spend HOURS in an art museum if you’d let them. For a friend like this, you should gift them the book The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V. E. Schwab. This newly released book follows the life of Addie LaRue all the way from the 1700s to modern day. Yes, this is right; Addie happens to be immortal. She made a deal with a demon back in the 1700s to get out of a marriage she didn’t want. So, Addie can live forever, but there is a catch—no one can remember her. As soon as she is out of sight from someone, they instantly forget who she is. This makes for some pretty awkward morning-afters… But Addie learns to be remembered through art. She is a muse for countless artists, whispering lyrics in their ears, posing for their paintings. This book is truly one of the most beautiful stories ever written. It’s dark. It’s deep. It’s elegant. And the cover is truly stunning. The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue is truly the perfect read for your artsy, deep-thinking friend.
For The Romantic One…
Do you have a friend who loves rom-coms? Have they seen The Kissing Booth more times than you can count? Are they in love with Peter Kavinsky and Hardin Scott? Maybe they’ve seen 50 Shades a few too many times? Then they NEED to read The Hating Game by Sally Thorne. In this sexy, witty romance novel, Lucy Hutton works alongside Joshua Templeman at her dream job. And however dreamy her co-worker may be, he is an absolute thorn in her side. They don’t get along. At all. They constantly mess with each other, and when a job promotion becomes available, things get a little more heated… metaphorically and literally. Lucy quickly learns that there is a fine line between love and hate. The Hating Game is a fan-favorite enemies-to-lovers story. Plus, it recently hit the screen in movie form, so this would be great to gift.
For The Thrill-Seeking One…
This friend probably loves video games. They probably prefer action movies over romance ones. And they for sure love to try new things. For the adventurous one in your life, get them Crown Chasers by Rebecca Coffindaffer. This is a newer release, so your friend hopefully doesn’t own it yet. In this novel, after trying to outrun her family’s legacy, Alyssa has no choice but to face it head on when the dying emperor, her uncle, announces a race across the planets to find the next ruler. This book is full of so many twists and turns. There’s danger, action, thrills, and adventure. Your adventure-loving friend will love this space race book!
For The Vintage One…
Do you have a friend who tells you that music isn’t like it once was? Do they listen to Fleetwood Mac constantly? Maybe wear bellbottoms or even roller-skate? Okay, then they need to read Daisy Jones & the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid. This book follows the story of 70s rock band Daisy Jones & the Six. It takes you through their experiences on the road, their struggles with addiction, the meaning behind their lyrics, and so much more. And, it’s written in interview format, so it’s a pretty quick read. My favorite thing about this book is how it shows three very different women behind the band and how each one is strong in their own way. Female empowerment looks different for everyone! Overall, this book gives off serious Fleetwood Mac vibes and is perfect for your friend who probably uses a record player to listen to their music. Oh, and bonus! Daisy Jones & the Six is in the works to become a TV show with Reese Witherspoon producing and Sam Claffin set to play the leading man.
For The Sporty One…
For your friend who was really missing sports during quarantine, you should check out Friday Night Lights. We’ve all heard of the TV show, but have you read the book? No? Okay, so this book is actually a true story. The author followed around the high school football team of Odessa, Texas to really see how valued football was there. What he learned: football > anything else. This book takes a deep dive into high school athletics culture, particularly as it pertains to academics, gender, family life, and societal pressures. This book is great for sports fan. This is the perfect book to gift this year!
Okay, so these are just a few books that your friends (or partner) are going to love! Flex your knowledge of your friend’s interests by giving them the book that fits them best for Valentine’s Day!
