The month of April embarks Louisville, Kentucky’s best time of year – that’s right, it’s Derby Season, folks!

One thing about Derby that sets it apart from any other annual event is its fashion. Though the horses come and go, one thing stays the same – bright colors, bold patterns, and big hats.
This year’s Derby is May 6, so you still have plenty of time to snag that perfect Derby outfit, hat and all.
Whether you are an avid Derby attendee, or if this is your first rodeo, here are some tips to takeaway regarding Derby Fashion.
#1 Don’t be scared to wear bold colors.
Derby fashion is meant to catch the eye. According to Jordan, the owner of the NuLu popup boutique Impromptu, the colors to look out for at the track this year are orange, pink, and lavender.
#2 Bring a poncho and dress in layers.
After spending all that time putting together the Project perfect Derby outfit, the last thing you want is for rain ruining the fit. Buy a poncho from the local dollar store and pack it in your bag. You’re also going to want to dress in layers. We all know how up and down Kentucky weather can be, so make sure you are prepared for both the hot and the cold.
#3 Dirty hair and extra ponytails.
If you wash your hair the night before or the day of Derby, after putting on your hat, your hair will immediately go flat. Consider leaving your hair a little dirty for Derby and using lots and lots of dry shampoo and hairspray.
#4 Don’t be afraid to go big.
Jordan from Impromptu reminded everyone that while your hat or fascinator may seem crazy or too much in the store, once you get to the track or viewing party, you’ll wish you went even bigger. Like Alexis from Six Sisters Boutique said, go big or go home!
#5 Pull something from a fascinator to place on a fedora.
A lot of times men’s fashion is left out of the Derby talk. Rebecca from Mamili explained how many men wear fedoras for Derby. She said that women will often pull a small feather or flower out of their fascinator and place it in their date’s fedora to match.
#6 Small accessories.
With such a big hat and bright color, keep in mind that it’s probably best to wear small accessories. Simple earrings, small necklaces, dainty rings — these are the way to go!
#7 Men’s fashion is fun too.
Just like the women, the men can have fun colors and patterns too! Whether it is a funky suit, a fedora with a feather, or just some cool socks, men can have fun with their outfits just as much as women. Men also have a history of collaboration with their partners colors or patterns.
